CAMBRIDGE Ladies Premier League
Newmarket Ladies 1st XI (2) vs Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (2)
Deeping set out with determination and drive against a team they have not played before as they have just been relegated from the East league which Deeping aspire to join.
Deeping had most of the possession with Gemma Catlin and Robynne Scott running the mid-field and distributing the ball wide for good runs from Amy Gwilliam and Becky Allam.
Newmarket’s two umpires made the game hard for Deeping, and what Deeping felt was a dubious short corner was awarded to Newmarket, from which they scored despite Angela Cox making a very good initial save.
Deeping had a good talking too at half time and came out with new drive. A Deeping attack led by Mandy Pearson and Joanne Addison was suddenly turned around into a Newmarket breakaway leading to a penalty flick which they converted.
Deeping held their heads high and a driving attack led by Becky Allam, and Natasha Newitt, took the ball into the D. Jo Addison picked the ball up on the back line and weaved around several defenders before scoring with a short sharp flick.
Then Amy Gwilliam broke through with clever weaving and tackling on the right of the field and smashed the ball into the D. There was a scramble on the base line in front of the Newmarket goalkeeper. Mandy Pearson had a shot on goal before Becky Allam pounced to score the equaliser with a quick reaction shot into the corner.Becky Allam, Amy Gwilliam and two from new signing Gayle Worthington saw Deeping comfortably home.

Ely City 1st XI (2) vs Market Deeping 1st XI (1)
DIVISION 3NW
Rutland 1st XI (6) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (0)
Last season Deeping gained promotion with a bedrock of a solid defence which conceded just 26 goals throughout the entire season. However, past glories count for nothing; and they travelled to Rutland for just their sixth game of the new campaign, with the disheartening statistic that their defence has already been breached as many times this season.
Put to the sword again by a young and athletic Rutland side, Deeping did not play badly. At times the short passing game which got them to into this division caused Rutland some problems, but poor decision making at crucial times across all areas of the pitch saw these moves all too often cut short and possession squandered.
A 3-0 scoreline at halftime flattered the home side, though there was no doubting their superiority. Nick Maxey, Neil Burford, and Treve Wagstaff all went close to getting on the score sheet for Deeping, the former with a superb reverse stick effort which flew just over the bar, but Rutland held them at bay, and as the younger, fitter legs of Rutland stretched the game, gaps in midfield appeared which Deeping struggled to plug and Rutland were happy to exploit to the tune of a further three goals to make the final score 6-0.
DIVISION 5NW
Market Deeping 3rd XI (1) vs Boston 1st XI (8)
Deeping with their hugely reduced pool of players had nothing to carp about and a lot to ponder after this heavy defeat. So drained were their resources that they had drafted in the chubby 53 year old Steve Windsor for his first swim of the season.
Most of their problems were self inflicted. The backs’ tendency to dab the ball about left them floundering when a clean clearance or simple backpass was what was required. The Boston players were like mackerel around a sprat, pouncing on any loose ball.
Deeping started poorly and things looked bleak when they conceded a first minute goal from some nervous defending as a Boston forward skated through. There was a ray of sunshine as Deeping rallied and Jaz Phagora found the net from a short corner. Deeping were knocking Boston off their perch and dominated the next ten minutes, with several short corners being lost at the net. They were then caught in possession and done up like a kipper as two barbed Boston attacks left them 3-1 down at halftime.
The second half began with a battering, as Boston scored in the first minute, followed by two more quick scores that left Deeping pouting. Deeping had lost their shape at the back and Boston wormed their way through, floating in for two more goals, despite some good saves from Deeping’s keeper.
Deeping were gutted by a few wasted chances which let Boston off the hook and didn’t deserve a defeat on this scale.
(Dedicated to Will Winfield-Chislett’s fishy excuses for not playing).
MOM: Kevin Baker – tireless in his efforts on and off the field.
