DIVISION 3NW
Wisbech 2nd XI (5) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (1)
Lack of players is costing Deeping this season. They traveled with the bare 11, and by half time were effectively down to nine with yet more injuries to key players.
Deeping are still showing commitment, desire and work rate but the scoreline tells the story. Wisbech opened the scoring with a no frills straight short corner strike but they were only 1-0 down when both injuries occurred before half time.
Deeping started the second half brightly but Wisbech soon began to exploit the extra space. Wisbech’s second was a sucker punch as Deeping had started the half brightly and looked like forcing their way back into the game.
Neil Burford was a willing outlet down the right flank, Henry Winfield Chislett dangerous down the left, and teenager Jack Seton, backed up by Graham Barnes, Chris Mann, and Wisbech old boy Simon Burnell, were starting to worry the opposition backline. At the back, the trio of Graham Brewer, Ben Dalgliesh, and Phil Tokens were looking organised and more disciplined than in the early exchanges.
A swift counter attack doubled Wisbech’s lead, while the third was skilfully chipped the over the onrushing ‘keeper only for the covering right back Ben Dalgliesh to slide in and clear it off the line into the sliding Brewer and off his knee into the goal.
A fourth goal came from a well worked short corner. A fifth was tough on Deeping ‘keeper Joe Wray who had made several excellent saves.
Deeping snatched a consolation in the final minutes, as walking wounded Simon Biggs sent a bobbling shot past the wrong-footed Wisbech keeper.
MOTM – Phil Tokens – excellent in the tackle and always willing to provide an outlet going forward.
DIVISION 5NW
Market Deeping 3rd XI (2) vs St Neots 3rd XI (3)
Deeping were unlucky not pick up another point in Div 5NW after fighting back from an early 2-0 deficit. St.Neots dominated the early play, but held firm until the visitors were awarded a hotly disputed penalty flick for an apparent deliberate backstick in the D. They were soon to concede a second when the St. Neots left back skipped past a series of mis-timed tackles and finished mid-stumble.
Deeping heads didn't drop and they moved the ball around more effectively, stretching the veteran Neots defence. Too often the final pass went astray but their pressure was rewarded when Jas Phagora flicked home high to the keeper's right from a scrappy short corner.
Just before half time Deeping leveled from their best move of the game. Short accurate passes saw the ball move quickly from Deeping's back line, through midfield to Paul Byrne, who picked out Kev Baker's run down the right wing. Ben Walden got between the last defender and keeper to tap in the equaliser from the final cross field pass.
Possession and chances were shared fairly evenly in the second half, but Deeping were amazed to be awarded only a short corner instead of a penalty flick of their own when Baker was upended in the D by a St.Neots defender.
With 10 minutes left in the game St.Neots grabbed what would prove to be the winner from a well hit short corner strike that ricocheted off both keeper's pads and defender's stick into the net.
Man of the Match: Kev Baker
