CAMBRIDGE Ladies League Division 1

March Town Ladies 1st XI (1) vs Market Deeping Ladies 2nd XI (5)

DIVISION 2N

Cambridge City 3rd XI (7) vs Market Deeping 1st XI (1)

DIVISION 3NW

Cambridge South 1st XI (5) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (1)

Deeping turned in possibly their best performance of the season so far, at least for the first 50 minutes. A solid first half saw them looking organised, disciplined, and working hard as a unit. They looked tight defensively, while still looking a threat on the counter attack against a team sitting 3rd in the league. The same old story of injuries and absenses saw a much changed line up once again, but though Cambs had decidedly more of the ball, tight marking and organisation restricted them to few clear cut chances; their best moments actually coming on the counter attack when Deeping did manage to build and push men forward, and when they did manage to break Deeping down, they found Joe Wray standing firm to deny them with a man of the match performance between the pipes.
The opener for Cambs when it came was undeniably deserved, but after such a resiliant opening period, Deeping were disappointed that the breakthrough came with Deeping temporarily down to 10 men; right back Dan Medd off the pitch receiving treatment after taking a lifted clearance from his own player square on the knee with no substitute available.
But Deeping heads did not drop, Medd returned to the fray, and Deeping saw out the half strongly to go into the break 1-0 down.
Cambs continued to control the game throughout the second half, but were left frustrated by a battling midfield quartet of Garrett, Gregson, Burnell, and Walden, while up front, Phagoora and Seaton jnr were causing enough of a nuisance of themselves to make Cambs think twice before committing numbers from the back.
Cambs then scored their second to give them the breathing space they needed to push men forward, but when Wilmot sent an aerial deep into Cambs territory, Walden, Phagoora, and Seaton combined superbly for Seaton to slot home his 2nd goal in his last 2 appearances for the 2nd XI.
With 20 minutes to go, Deeping pushed hard to get back into the game, but Cambs bagged their 3rd, and with a 2 goal cushion and 3 substitutes rolling on and off, they were always going to finish stronger against a tiring bare 11 and the 4th and 5th goals soon followed to give the scoreline a somewhat harsher gloss.
Deeping may not have kicked off the new year with a win, but performances like this one are just what the doctor ordered if they are to gain the points they need to stave off relegation.
