CAMBRIDGE Ladies Premier League

City of Peterborough Ladies 3rd XI (0) vs Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (2)

Deeping won this game far more easily than the score suggests, especially when a missed penalty flick and disallowed goal are both taken into account.
They dominated almost from the first whistle, and Peterborough’s inability to control the midfield saw Deeping’s backs increasingly driving up the field and joining the attack. This released their forwards to attack a very solid Peterborough defence who initially soaked up pressure.
Late into the first half Amy Gwilliam, who was tormenting the Peterbrough defence, had the ball in the net only to have the goal controversially ruled out by the well-positioned Deeping umpire. Moments later the same umpire played advantage when the ball came up in the D off the prostrate Peterborough keeper. Gwilliam kept her head to nudge the lofted ball safely over the keeper into the net. Many other chances had gone begging at the half-time whistle
Deeping’s pressure eventually told in the second half after a nasty blood injury to a Peterborough player. Both Kirsten Hackett and Gemma Catlin had been driving out of defence through midfield, practically unchallenged or beating tackles with ease. Hackett had nearly run through and scored from the halfway line, and with Tash Newitt in complete control in the left midfield, Deeping were running riot. The final touch eluded them until Catlin’s long through ball was bungled by the Peterborough keeper and as she often does, Becky Allam pounced to force the ball home. Gwilliam then went up in the air over the home keeper and the umpire gave a stroke which the keeper promptly saved.
After besieging the City goal for most of the game, Deeping can be pleased with a strong team performance.

Deeping thoroughly rattled the league champions elect on their muddy facility at Boston, as once again they were able to put a strong team on the pitch.
Jerry Phipps was back in harness after premature retirement. Jabber is always late but never half a season before…
Deeping also had Tom Richardson in the side, on a rare release from school duties at Oakham, and his prowess in front of goal was to prove important.
Boston started really well and pressurised Deeping who still looked dangerous when they did break out. But for some reason Deeping looked hesitant and on three occasions, this cost them dear as Boston players smashed the ball into the net. Boston’s centre forward was yellow carded and with their side down to ten, right on the halftime whistle, Deeping got their third short corner of the match. Drag flicks from Tom Richardson had already brought a fine save from the Boston keeper, and he went to chest this one away only to see the sheer power deflect the ball into the net.
Deeping really fancied their chances at halftime, but despite an improved defensive performance they were caught on the break and conceded a fourth before Richardson ripped another amazing short corner drag flick straight through the Boston net for his second goal.
A late fifth goal flattered Boston who found it hard to believe that Deeping sit so low in the league. If they can put out their strongest squad for the rest of the season they may yet do something about that.
