CAMBS PREMIER CUPMarket Deeping Ladies 1st XI (6) vs Sawtry Ladies 1st XI (1)After a long summer break Deeping were keen to start the season with a positive performance and so were disappointed to go a goal down early in the first half following a break from mid field by Sawtry which reached an unmarked attacker who went on to slot past the Deeping keeper, Ally Swift who was recovering from an illness earlier in the week. Deeping regrouped and worked hard for the remainder of the half to level the score creating several chances that were well defended by the Sawtry keeper. After a focused team talk, Deeping made a couple of substitutions and came out for the second half determined to use the full width of the pitch to break Sawtry’s hold over the midfield. As Deeping made better use of the players on both flanks gaps began to open up and it was not long before Sarah Smith struck an equaliser. This inspired Deeping and after a skilful run down the right Amy Gwilliam fired a cross into the centre of the D to find Janet Eagle-Smith who quickly slipped the ball to Laura Tompson-Wright to her left. Laura calmly pushed the ball behind the keeper to make it 2-0. Deeping continued to dominate and within five minutes Tompson-Wright was again on the score sheet after a reverse stick shot was misjudged by the keeper as it rolled underneath her foot. Although Sawtry fought hard and forced a couple of diving saves by Ally Swift in the Deeping goal they were no match for the enthusiastic Deeping side. In the final 10 minutes Deeping found the net three more times with goals from Gemma Caitlin (2) and Amy Gwilliam to close the match at 6-1. Mens FriendlyMarket Deeping 3rd XI (4) vs Pelicans 3rd XI (1)Deeping’s third team hosted Kings Lynn based Pelicans 3rd in the second of their pre season friendlies. Pelicans started strongly exerting a lot of pressure on the Deeping defence, but Deeping held firm thanks in no small part to a couple of smart saves from debutant keeper Andy Leadbetter. Slowly Deeping began to establish their passing game and took the lead mid way through the half when Ben Walden pounced on a rebound from the keeper’s pads following a fine run and shot down the right wing from Matt Brown. Shortly after the restart Jason Purllant's defence splitting pass picked out the run of Deeping skipper Kev Baker who slid the ball calmly under the onrushing Pelicans keeper to give the home side a somewhat flattering 2-0 half time lead. An equally competitive second half saw chances missed at both ends before a good team move down the Deeping left found Baker free again in the D and his square pass left Steve Waters with a simple tap in to extend Deeping's lead to 3-0. Pelicans continued to push to get something out of the game and finally got a deserved goal from a well-worked short corner routine with ten minutes to go. Deeping snuffed out any threat of a late rally from the visitors when, shortly after the restart, they broke quickly and Waters picked up his second and Deeping's fourth goal with a clever reverse stick deflection.
