CAMBRIDGE Ladies Premier Cup

Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (2) vs Peterborough Ladies 3rd XI (1)

Deeping struggled to beat a well organised Peterborough side that absorbed pressure throughout the game before another great team effort gave them their third league win of the season.
The first half saw both teams closely matched with Tash Newitt and Gemma Catlin bossing the midfield but City of Peterborough managed to score after 20 minutes through a move that ended with the ball being pushed into the net by an unmarked player on the goal post. Minutes later Amy Gwilliam’s powerful penalty flick crashed into the base of the post to further frustrate Deeping.
The second half produced more Deeping pressure and finally Gemma Catlin managed to crack the ball into the backboard.
The midfield players worked  hard and their efforts were rewarded with a second goal which began with Amy Gwilliam passing the ball wide to Laura Thompson-Wright who took it down the right side of the D and passed calmly back to Gwilliam who slipped the ball to Becky Allam for her to slam into the goal from close range
Deeping couldn’t get a third and Peterborough rallied in the last few minutes when a raised shot from a penalty corner could have led to a penalty stroke but was judged too high by the Deeeping umpires.
MOM: Laura Thompson Wright – a fine second half performance on the wing that left Gwilliam free to rampage around the fringes of the Peterborough D.

CAMBRIDGE Ladies League Division 1

Market Deeping Ladies 2nd XI (5) vs Cambridge City Ladies 4th XI (1)

City who sportingly made the journey north with just eight players and no goalkeeper can be proud of this performance against a nervous Deeping team still finding their legs at a higher level.
Cambridge somehow managed to take the lead with a well-worked first half goal and for a while it looked like they might add more.
Gradually Deeping settled, and as Cambridge tired a much-improved Deeping second half performance saw them steamroller Cambridge.
This was based on an improved defensive performance that gave Deeping’s half backs time and license to push up.
As a result Deeping skipper Nicky Buckby continued her prolific scoring record with four goals and the incredibly hard-working Charlotte Baxter converted one of a potential hat-trick of chances.
MOM: Emma Burt who has had a lengthy break from hockey but seems to improve with every minute she plays.

DIVISION 2N

Market Deeping 1st XI (1) vs Felixstowe 1st XI (4)

DIVISION 3NW

City of Peterborough 5th XI (3) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (3)

Promoted Deeping pinched their first point in 3NW as they shared the spoils with fellow new boys Peterborough 5th.
Deeping started the brighter of the two sides, and Ali Rowledge put them ahead, reacting quickly to knock home a rebound off the Peterborough keeper.
Deeping looked solid and organised at the back, but as Peterborough pressed, the number of mis-hit clearances and misplaced passes from the back began to put Deeping’s defenders under self-inflicted pressure.
Deeping’s threadbare squad have had rotten luck with injuries so far this season, rarely having the luxury of a sub, and they are yet to finish a league game unscathed. This match was no different as Simon Biggs succumbed to a knee injury, forcing a tactical reshuffle.
Peterborough continued to have more of the ball, and the equaliser was no more than they deserved.
Deeping retook the lead in the second half when Mike Gregson smashed home a first time shot from the right side of the D. Deeping got a bonus when the hobbling Biggs was found lurking up front all alone and he produced a confident finish to give Deeping a 3-1 lead.
Unfortunately Deeping continued to demonstrate some suicidal defending as keeper Joe Wray pole axed Peterborough’s Simon Buckley. He converted the penalty flick
Deeping continued to push up in search of a fourth goal to clinch it, but it was Peterborough who pinched an equaliser then hit the post. At the other end Deeping failed to convert a string of short corners.
MOTM: Graham Barnes – industrious up front and in midfield, always made himself available, and unlucky not to get himself on the score sheet.

DIVISION 5NW

St Ives 3rd XI (3) vs Market Deeping 3rd XI (2)

Deeping’s third team rounded off a frustrating weekend for the men as they were pipped by an apparently out of form St Ives team that seemed amazed at their own success. Both sides were largely based on veterans, but a couple of pacey youngsters gave St Ives added zest when they went forward. They looked far from out of form.
St. Ives attacked from the off and were rewarded with a couple of well taken goals in the space of thee minutes halfway through the first half. Deeping struggled to move the ball out of midfield but responded with a Richard Garret goal after some controversial umpiring.
As the second half progressed, St Ives were making the better chances and after more controversy as a goal was disallowed, they built their lead from a short corner. With a Deeping player off the field for a second deliberate foot stop they surprisingly rallied and made some chances and when the player returned looked even moiré dangerous. Ben Dalgliesh was rewarded for persistence in front of goal by getting Deeping’s second. St Ives quickly regained the upper hand, as Deeping looked tired, and only a string of saves from a short corner after the final whistle kept the score close.
MOM: Tom Richardson – the youngster combined some great tackling with some dangerous runs down the right.
