DIVISION 2N
Market Deeping 1st XI (3) vs University of East Anglia 1st XI (2)
Deeping showed their best and worst side in this desperately needed struggling victory over fellow Div 2N basement side UEA.
Deeping started reasonably well and caught UEA at the back early on when Ali Rowledge’s effort was turned onto the post by their keeper. Unfortunately UEA responded by going straight down to the other end where a bobbling shot was cleverly turned into the net after it flew high over Deeping’s keeper.
Ten minutes later UEA got a second when a forward was allowed to turn unmarked and reverse stick powerfully home from close range.
Deeping were playing pretty poorly at this stage, constantly losing the ball in midfield, and only a couple of good saves – and some poor UEA finishing – kept them in the game.
Halftime changed something and Deeping instantly swept forward, with Paul Tancred tormenting the UEA defence, and a string of short corners followed.
UEA started to make a lot of unforced errors and eventually Russ Seton picked up the rebound from the third short corner - Phil Arnold’s drag flick - and rifled it home.
UEA struggled to get back into the game and Deeping looked very dangerous when they broke quickly. Deeping were actually down to nine men when they won another short corner which Pete Jeffery (who was also outstanding in Deeping’s defence) scored from with a powerful shot. Ali Rowledge had been sent off for dissent and Deeping’s skipper Richard Woods followed as after a warning for dissent Deeping’s coach was unable to keep his mouth shut. This resulted in the blameless Woods’ removal.
Deeping barely deserved to be back in the game, but UEA continued to make unforced errors, and going forward Deeping looked very dangerous.
Rowledge returned and Deeping were back to ten after only a minute or so, then UEA were reduced to ten for a defender’s body block on the charging Tancred. Deeping failed to score from the corner, but after several defensive errors, Tancred burst into the UEA D and appeared to score. A late whistle saw the goal ruled out and Tancred’s subsequent protests saw a yellow card upgraded to a red - and at least a 16 day suspension.
Back down to ten, Deeping soaked up pressure, broke fast and won yet another short corner. Russ Seton smashed the shot which looked too high - but the umpire adjudged it to have hit a defender’s stick and the goal stood.
There was just time for the hard-working wing back Phil Arnold to race back and clear off the line when UEA seemed to have equalised to end an edgy and emotional game.
Deeping have another vital pre-Christmas fixture next week when they play basement side Ipswich 3rd who they have already beaten once this season.
DIVISION 3NW
Market Deeping 2nd XI (2) vs March Town 2nd XI (1)
After a nail-biting 70 minutes, Deeping achieved their first win of the season at the expense of high flying March 2nd.
Stand-in skipper Phil Tokens had a fine game supported by hard work in midfield from Tom Burnell and the return of the determined Terry Musgrove after ay ear out of the area.
March were a little understrength for this game but nothing should be taken away from the long-suffering Deeping side who played some very good hockey and hung on by the skin of their teeth for the last few minutes.
After a close first half which Deeping shaded, Deeping opened the scoring from a Simon Burnell short corner flick from a rebound.
March then scored past an unsighted Joe Wray in the Deeping goal slightly against the run of play. They now looked dangerous but Deeping weathered the storm with Wray making some good saves. One shot went from pad onto the post, and Deeping then burst down to the other end where Ben Dalgliesh was released on the top of the D. Bravely bouncing off a wild tackle as the umpire played a good advantage, he regained his footing and scored into the far corner.
Amazed at the position they had found themselves in, Deeping now looked very nervous – but they hung on to earn a well-deserved win.
