CAMBRIDGE Ladies Premier league

Cambridge University Ladies 3rd XI (0) vs Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (1)

Unbeaten Deeping did well too maintain their composure against a rather physical Cambridge side.
The University initially put Deeping under a lot of pressure down the right hand side but half back Natasha Newitt contained them well.
Deeping replied with several short corner opportunities and were unlucky not to score from efforts by Gemma Catlin and Mandy Pearson.
Deeping’s player of the match Amy Gwilliam continued to make probing runs down the right wing and eventually found Mandy Pearson in the D and she calmly slipped the ball to Sarah Smith who pushed the ball beyond the Cambs keeper.
Deeping came out in the second half with a new formation to strengthen their defence and defend their lead. This proved successful move and when Deeping did attack the University was struggling to keep them at bay.
Gradually Deeping ground Cambridge down as Deeping showed their stamina and fitness.
In the Deeping goal Angela Cox continuously cleared her lines backed by defenders Ellie and Becky Allam who with Debbie Bowen worked relentlessly through the game.
By the last quarter of the game Deeping were in full control and can be proud of this win.

CAMBRIDGE Ladies League Division 1

Newmarket Ladies 2nd XI (3) vs Market Deeping Ladies 2nd XI (0)

Deeping took an under strength side to Newmarket and emerged with their heads held high. Deeping included one player who had literally never played before in their ten lady team. One thing was quickly clear – the youngsters Deeping blooded last season in Division Two have improved massively and can hold their own in Division One. Laura Thompson-Wright was outstanding and Emily Reeson’s work rate impressive
A nervous defensive start and a couple of unlucky breaks saw Deeping quickly 2-0 down. A little more calmness and some firmer clearances away from the danger zone and Deeping would have survived.
The second half was so different, as the defence began to clear the ball firmly off the side of the pitch and with keeper Aly Swift more than equal to most things Newmarket could throw at her, winning a couple of one to ones and adding a good reaction save, Deeping looked a different team. They made chances of their own and only a high quality Newmarket short corner found the net.
Player of the match: Laura Thompson-Wright

DIVISION 2N

Market Deeping 1st XI (6) vs Cambridge City 3rd XI (1)

Despite their great start to their first season in Division Two, Deeping were quickly set back by a points fine from an administrative error. There should be no such problems this year in their second, and Deeping proudly ride high at the top of the league, two points clear after two games.
Deeping went into this first home game of the season at almost full strength. From the off they dominated, with Cambridge only getting the odd chance but nothing to challenge new Keeper Tim Beaver.
Before long Deeping were in the goals with the precocious teenager Jack Seton getting his first of the season followed by Paul Tancred with a cheeky lob.
Deeping continued to dominate the second half.
Pete Jeffery got a third from a broken down short corner and five minutes later Tancred flicked home his second.
Deeping changed formation slightly to combat a growing Cambridge midfield threat but this was also snuffed out by a couple of Cambridge yellow cards for dissent.
Chris Mann scored after the keeper misjudged his shot and Seton nipped in to get his second of the game.
Cambridge got a soft late consolation goal from a short corner.

DIVISION 3NW

Market Deeping 2nd XI (0) vs Cambridge South 1st XI (4)

A strong second half performance was small comfort as Deeping found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat.
The early exchanges were more or less even, but Deeping are rapidly learning that short corners are harder to win at this level, and more importantly, much more dangerous to concede.
Cambridge opened the scoring from a short corner which was switched back to the initial injector and flicked home from a tight angle.
South’s second came from a one on one on the Deeping ‘keeper.
By the time the third goal came, Cambs were well on top, with keeper Stuart Ireland performing heroics in the Deeping goal to prevent the game being over by half time. He managed to save the first shot, but the rebound was pushed home.
A half time reshuffle saw a deflated Deeping looking to salvage some pride, but despite looking more organised both with and without the ball, another short corner made it four when a short corner strike took a deflection off a defender’s stick, giving Ireland no chance.
Simon Burnell and Neil Burford both went close for Deeping as they pushed for a consolation, but skipper Graham Brewer rounded off a disappointing performance with a yellow card for a deliberate foul in the last five minutes.
South have started the season strongly and it’s too early for promoted Deeping to panic, but they must learn quickly from these early defeats if they are to stay in this league.
Man of the match: Stuart Ireland who prevented a first half rout with a succession of stick saves.

DIVISION 5NW

Wisbech Town 4th XI (1) vs Market Deeping 3rd XI (1)

Last season’s Div 6 champions met runners-up Deeping at Wisbech and like last season when each won one fixture the points were shared.
Better finishing from either side could have given the scoreline a very different look, but both teams were reasonably happy with a draw.
Both sides featured large numbers of veteran players, with Deeping especially upping their age profile with several youngsters away at University. Highly competent defending from the wise old heads on both sides was a major factor, but slower legs led to breakaway opportunities for both sides. Kev Richardson’s long arms and reading of the game won him loads of ball while Jaz Phagora’s distribution carved holes in the Wisbech defence.
Deeping started really well with the two Bens – Walden and Dalgliesh -troubling the Wisbech defence. But Wisbech scored from their first short corner somewhat against the run of play. Within minutes Jaz Phagora had equalised from a somewhat fortuitous short corner. Deeping certainly edged the first half from then and some good chances were wasted.
Typically Wisbech made some major changes at half-time and came out looking much the stronger team. Competent goalkeeping from the stand-in Will Winfield-Chislett and a seemingly endless string of covering tackles from the youthful and speedy Matt Brown at right back kept them at bay. Wisbech did waste one excellent chance and continued to dominate despite being surprisingly temporarily reduced to 10 men. Deeping weathered the storm and regained the midfield as a second strange sending off situation reduced both teams to ten men again. This seemed to rattle Wisbech more than Deeping who missed two superb late breakaway chances to pinch the points.
Man of the match: Matt Brown – skipper Kevin Baker said: “He never missed a tackle…”
