Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (1) vs St Ives Ladies 2nd XI (1)
A well organised defensively minded St Ives posed Deeping a few problems in an entertaining and close game. The match seemed to go in phases, with both sides dominant for short periods, and it was a question of Deeping’s pace and individual skills against St Ives’ stacked defence. St Ives would then break out and apply the pressure to Deeping again.
St Ives dominated the first ten minutes, but then Deeping had their say.
But despite defensive calmness and the usual competent goalkeeping from Angela Cox, Deeping were forced to concede the odd short corner and at one of these St Ives scored a very well worked short corner. Deeping replied after a string of their own shorts, Gemma Caitlin heeding the “head down, nose pointing at the ball” advice from their pre-match warm up to smash the ball home. Janet Eagle-Smith was pulling the defence around but Deeping continued to run too centrally and attack down the left, making goal attempts difficult.
Deeping’s defenders were still very effective, with Rachel Gale and Ellie Allam interchanging and covering well, but nerves were a little more obvious than usual, and Deeping were occasional hesitant when St Ives ran at them.
They had a better second half and Deeping used their wingers well with Catlin, Tash Newitt and Kirsten Hackett regularly releasing Amy Gwilliam effectively on the right, and Sarah Smith on the left, but these pacey forwards found themselves up against some equally fast defenders for once.
At the end of warm morning’s work both teams had run themselves to a stop and Deeping were possibly regretting only fielding the bare 11 players.

Spalding 2nd XI (1) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (8)
Another big win for unbeaten Deeping as they demolished Spalding 2nd 8-1
Spalding spurned early chances to score but Joe (the Ninja) Wray in the Deeping goal put in another rock solid display, and as Deeping settled and took control, they made Spalding rue those missed early chances.
Phil Arnold opened the scoring, before Henry Winfield-Chislett got the first of an impressive hat-trick. Arnold grabbed a second before half-time to make it 3-0 to Deeping at the break.
Deeping had talked long and hard about keeping their discipline in this encounter, and as Spalding fought to get back into the game, Deeping needed to hold firm and look to score first after the restart. Third team skipper Kev Baker and Paul Byrne had worked tirelessly in the heat in the centre of midfield to keep Deeping in the game during that early wobble.
The fourth goal took a while, but when it did come it effectively killed off the game. Neil Burford, and Dan Medd in perhaps their best game together were carving Spalding open down the right seemingly at will, and when Burford again tore down the right like a well-warmed shiv through a packet of Lurpak, his attempted cut back was deflected into the Spalding net by a defender. Man of the match Winfield-Chislett then took over to complete his hat-trick before a first goal of the campaign for centre back Simon Wilmot, coolly converting a short corner for number seven.
Not to be outdone, Simon Burnell, the club’s striker in form added yet another to his impressive tally, while there was still time for Arnold to miss out on a hat-trick of his own, scuffing a penalty flick awarded after he had been sent tumbling in the D.
Spalding did grab the goal their play deserved, a cross from the right worryingly bypassing the backline completely to find a player unmarked at the far post to sweep home the consolation.

Deeping’s slip date Sunday opposition, Cambs City 5th, cried off shortly before the game leaving Deeping fuming on the pitch, but claiming three points in their drive for the 4NW championship – but this also left first team skipper Richard Woods with a weakened squad for his defeat at Cambridge University.
