CAMBS Ladies Premier League

Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (2) vs Cambridge City Ladies 3rd XI (2)

In their last game of the season Deeping started slowly, allowing Cambs city to dominate play, and testing Deeping’s defence.
Deeping defended a number of the short corners well, but Cambs slotted a lucky but well placed shot into the back of the net after 25 minutes.
Deeping were then awarded a penalty flick but failed to convert it, and with everything including the umpire’s decisions seeming to go against them this was a low point made worse when Cambs scored again.
Deeping started the second half with a nil-nil attitude determined to gain control of the match. After just a few minutes Deeping scored with a great training ground play, Kirsten Hackett driving down the right wing and releasing the ball to Sarah Smith who from the back line switched it back to Hackett to slam it in the back of the goal. Deeping continued to dominate play, and won several short corners. Man of the match, Gemma Catlin struck the second of these perfectly and it screamed into the backboard.
Deeping kept up this renewed pace and improved attitude with the team working as a unit.
Amy Gwilliam’s skill and pace took the ball through and up the wing sending the ball into the D while Catlin hammered some powerful long corners across the goalmouth - but no-one was able to get a stick on these.
Deeping finish in second place in their first season in the Premier league

Market Deeping 2nd XI (9) vs Cambridge Nomads 3rd XI (0)

City of Peterborough 5th XI (3) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (0)

Deeping’s 20 match unbeaten run finally came to an end at Bretton Gate on Sunday, but not before they had clinched the 4NW championship by smashing nine past a relegated Cambs Nomads side the previous day.
Nomads took to the field with just 10 men, and to their credit at times they made Deeping work just as hard as if they had been up against the full complement.
A 3-0 halftime score line was well deserved though, but the second half saw Deeping exploit the extra space much more effectively as Nomads understandably started to feel the effects of being a man down. Henry Winfield-Chislett took the opportunity to grab his second hat-trick of the season, Neil Burford scored twice, while Phil Arnold became the first 2nd XI player to make double figures for the season with a brace of his own, with Chris Mann and Simon Burnell also making an appearance on the score sheet.
The best of the goals began with a 16 yard hit in Deeping’s half and was smashed home by Winfield-Chislett without a Cambs player touching it.
The following day Deeping were left wishing they could have banked a couple of those goals and transferred them forward into this encounter as they went down 3-0 to City of Peterborough 5th , the first time they have drawn a blank this season.
They went into this fixture in the fortunate position of knowing they did not need anything from the game, while Peterborough, currently in 3rd place just a point behind St Ives, knew they needed at least a point if they were to keep their promotion challenge on track.
The first half saw little action in either D. Phil Arnold had an early one -on -one opportunity, and Peterborough had a few short corners, but in truth neither side really looked like breaking the deadlock.
Half time came and went with the scores still level, but as Deeping began to feel the effects of playing two games in two days, Peterborough began to dominate. Tired bodies and tired minds meant Deeping were squandering possession far too easily, and the breakthrough when it came had a certain inevitability about it.
A short corner was calmly worked to make it 1-0, and just minutes later another short corner was converted to double the home side’s advantage.

As Deeping tried in vain to chase the game they were killed off by a third goal on the break, and then saw ‘keeper Joe Wray taken off injured with 10 minutes left to play.
Centre-back Phil Tokens bravely stepped into the breach, donning the pads to see out the final ten minutes, proving himself a more then capable stand-in with some excellent saves.
For Deeping, a game too far in what has been an excellent season achieving promotion. For Peterborough, a nervous few days as they must now hope Deeping can beat St Ives on Wednesday night.
A win for St Ives will see them join Deeping in 3NW next year, but should Deeping earn a point or more, it will be Peterborough celebrating alongside their local rivals.

Market Deeping 3rd XI (7) vs Long Sutton 3rd XI (0)

Promoted Deeping brushed aside ten man Long Sutton in a celebratory last game of the 6NW season.
They took a little time to get through Sutton’s defence, but when Graham Barnes picked up Mark Kendall’s right wing pass in the D and slid it into the net, the floodgates opened. Steve Waters cleverly deflected a second home, then Jas Phagora converted a short corner.
Deeping rolled around their players to keep everyone involved and Tom Allam had only been on the pitch moments when he picked up the rebound off a post from Ben Walden’s brilliant reverse stick flick and pushed it home. Utility defender, goalkeeper and today striker Steve Windsor was then awarded a goal but owned up to it striking his foot. He got his reward minutes later when Tom Richardson’s accurate free hit struck a foot in the D, and with his back to the goal he flipped the bobbling ball over the keeper.
The second half performance was far less impressive as several players were guilty of greediness as they chased the goals. Huge spaces had opened up in Sutton’s defence but they were rarely used.
Barnes showed how to finish ruthlessly as he picked up a rebound and ripped a flick into the net from close range and Phagora finished the scoring as Deeping wasted far too many chances.
