CAMBS Ladies Cup
Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (3) vs Huntingdon Ladies 1st XI (2)
Both sides fielded a few second teamers in this opening game of 2009, but Deeping will have been the happier side as they dominated proceedings. Better finishing might have seen a dozen goals, and Huntingdon’s scores were against the run of play.
Deeping looked dangerous early in the game and hammered at the Huntingdon goal without getting much on target.
Hunts then scored after a short corner bobbled about the D before being tapped home. Deeping were a bit miffed and none more so than skipper Sarah Smith who promptly went on a breathtaking one person rampage. She ran in a brilliant solo effort from the halfway line, using her searing pace, then completed with a clever reverse flick over the keeper’s leg. She then repeated the feat from slightly closer, slapping home on the strong side having beaten half the defence on the way to the goal.
Deeping totally dominated after the break, and Gemma Caitlin and Amy Gwilliam set about battering the opposition woodwork which somehow kept them at bay. Caitlin might have had a hat trick with more luck and that didn’t include the shots she put wide and the one stopped by one of her own team.
Driven on by probing midfield work by Kirsten Hackett and the attacking and defensive skills of the Allam sisters and Fay Shepherd they produced a mean minded defence that gobbled up every loose ball. Something had to yield to Deeping’s pressure and eventually Caitlin smashed home a loose ball.
To their credit Deeping went on attacking only to be caught by a Hunts goal late on which added a little spice to the last few minutes.
