Market Deeping 1st IX (10) vs Sudbury 2nd XI (0)

It was unfortunate for Div 2N basement side Sudbury 2nd that they found Deeping on the top of their game, and they were promptly ripped to pieces by good hockey and by slick short corner routines.
Paul Tancred struck four times, and James Sharpe and Chris Mann each grabbed two, Ali Rowledge and Andy Kind completing the scoring..

CAMBS Mens Div 4 NW

Market Deeping 2nd XI (3) vs St Neots 2nd XI (2)

Deeping remain unbeaten after a tough challenge from one of the league’s stronger sides. They certainly didn’t expect to find themselves 2-0 up early on in the game through two well well-taken short corners from Russ Seaton one a dribble and push and the other a powerful strike after making space for a shot.
This roused St Neots, who dominated the rest of the half and they quickly made it 2-1. Neots have a dangerous short corner routine, but fortunately it didn’t seem to be firing on all cylinders, and when one shot did look destined to lob home, Simon Biggs pulled off yet another mid-air goal line clearance. Skipper Graham Brewer was also forced to clear off the line once more before Neots scored an excellent goal.
Neots were then briefly reduced to ten men when the scorer swore at an umpire, but Deeping could not make the extra man count.
The second half again belonged to St Neots but with Phil Tokens and new signing Karl Taylor calm at the back, Deeping looked more solid. Neots did get the ball into the net at one point, but it was disallowed.

Deeping however kept creating the odd chance, but good attacking positions were not being turned into shooting opportunities. But when St Neots conceded a free hit on the edge of their own D, Dan Medd picked out Mike Gregson who capped his man of the match performance in centre midfield by smashing home the winner. The last ten minutes saw some dogged and desperate defending from a Deeping side that must it cure itself of the habit of giving the ball back to the opposition so easily

CAMBS Mens Div 6 NW

Ely 3rd XI (2) vs Market Deeping 3rd XI (3)

When Ben Walden gets it right on the hockey pitch he looks like a superstar and his first half hat trick just about saw Deeping home in this clash of two unbeaten 6NW teams.
Deeping started the better side and the very first short corner from Kev Richardson was touched into the roof of the net by a racing Walden. The second short corner saw a goalmouth melee before Walden popped up to slot home the rebound from Alex Gale’s effort..
Ely then got back into the game but Deeping’s long-retired makeshift keeper rode his luck and kept them at bay, before one of several excellent passing moves saw Matt Brown pop up in front of goal and his half-saved shot was skilfully pounced on by Walden for his third.
Deeping were never so dominant again and the second half started badly when a powerfully struck Ely short corner nutmegged the Deeping keeper. Ely piled on the pressure and when the ball ran loose on the right the keeper’s save from an unmarked player simply bounced back to Ely’s centre-forward to push home.
Now Deeping were guilty of being far too elaborate and dribbling too much in their own half and after their recent success, show-boating a little in midfield. Minor injuries to skipper Kev Baker and Kev Richardson didn’t help their mobility. Then it seemed Ely must score into an open net but their umpire had spotted an offence and blew the whistle.
Somehow Deeping avoided any more shots and snuffed out Ely’s short corners before gradually regaining their organisation and mustering enough passes to produce some good attacks up the right side. Rob Glover dropped back to control the defence and Deeping enjoyed an alarm-free last ten minutes.
