CAMBS LEAGUE CUPMarket Deeping Ladies 1st XI (3) vs Cambridge City Ladies 4th XI (5)Deeping were unsure of what to expect from newly promoted Cambridge City 4th and the play was pretty even until Sarah Smith determinedly worked the ball over the Cambs goal line to break the deadlock. Becky Allam dominated on the left, but Cambs came back to score leaving Deeping aware they would need to keep the pressure on. Deeping’s second goal came from a perfectly placed penalty flick by the excellent Sarah Smith. Deeping led 2-1 at half time but despite some great saves from Laura Gwilliam in goal and the persistence of the defence, Cambs equalised. Several long and short corners saw Deeping keep possession in the Cambridge 25 and they quickly regained the lead when Faye Logan took the ball around several Cambs defenders and crossed perfectly for sub Kirsten Hackett to drive it in to the back of the net. Deeping continued to move the ball up the pitch with some quick runs by Gemma Catlin and Cambs only seemed to threaten the Deeping goal on the break. Towards the end of the game Deeping’s lack of substitutes began to take its toll and, despite some well timed tackles by Beth Askham, they conceded two late goals. Although the result was not what Deeping were hoping for, they can be pleased with much of their performance and, despite losing some key players, they look to be developing into a useful team. |
