CAMBS League Div 1
Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (4) vs Bourne Ladies 3rd XI (0)
Deeping retained their leadership of the Cambs Div one with a comfortable 4 – 0 win over Bourne 3rd. Deeping created chances from the start and at their first short corner a determined Amy Gwilliam made sure the ball was seen by the umpires to have gone over the line.
Deeping upped their efforts and rarely gave the young Bourne team a chance to get in their D. They were awarded further short corners and Ellie Allam went close several times but Deeping were unable to score again before half time.
The youngsters of Bourne were urged on by their older members and were able to make a couple of runs at the Deeping defence but they weren’t able to test Deeping’s Laura Gwilliam in goal.
Deeping were aware they needed to put more goals on the board but it took a superb reverse hit from Becky Allam to further Deeping’s lead. A third goal came from the left when, after a battle in the “D”, Amy Ellington put away her first ever league goal.
Deeping continued to show their patience with their play and continued to pressurise the Bourne defence on the right, particularly through newcomer Fay “Bob” Shepherd.
A penalty flick taken by Sarah Smith gave Deeping their fourth and final goal of the match. The excellent keeping of Bourne’s goalie prevented Deeping from extending their lead, but they will need to increase their goal difference to ensure their lead in the tables. Player of the match went to Gemma Catlin.
CAMBS LEAGUE Div 2
Market Deeping Ladies 2nd XI (5) vs Wisbech Ladies 3rd XI (1)
Deeping attacked right from the start and within the first five minutes Joanne Addison scored from a rebound at a short corner.
Deeping were hungry for more goals. Lisa Jackman scored from a long corner, going through three defenders then through Wisbech goalkeeper’s legs into the right corner of the goal.
Wisbech pushed up and scored from their only shot on goal throughout the entire match.
Erin Carmody (player of the match for the second week running) had some excellent runs and fed the ball up the pitch enabling Anya Mckenzie to pass to Nicky Buckby who then scored into the left corner of the goal. Debby Wilding made another solo run up the pitch and scored Deeping’s fourth goal.
The match showed the benefit of Deeping’s short corner training from coach Julie Bowers, as Lisa Jackman then scored her second goal of the match with a direct strike from a penalty corner.
It was 5 – 1 at half time but the second half saw Deeping flagging after an unfortunate injury to Anya Mckenzie’s ankle.
It was what we have we hold as the team pulled together and defended fiercely. Deeping’s defence stood strong with some good stick work from Tracey Winbourne in her best game this season.
EAST 3NW
Market Deeping 1st XI (13) vs March 2nd XI (0)
There are no sporting clichés left to describe Deeping’s recent goalscoring exploits in the NE14 East league Div 3NW. They have amassed 41 goals in the last three games. This crushing defeat of March’s 2nd team was achieved by the same slick passing, speed and fitness, as all the others. The ball is being moved at tremendous pace and when it isn’t, the opposition are being surprised by sudden bursts of silky dribbling into the D.
Deeping opened the scoring in the first two minutes when Russ Seton got onto the end of an accurate pass and forced home past the March keeper. The goals continued to come through Paul Tancred (6), James Sharpe (3), Henry Winfield-Chislett (2) and Chris Mann. It was 6-0 at half time and once again Deeping didn’t relax in the second half.
Especially pleasing was that Tancred (19 goals now in three games) didn’t always have to use all his poaching skills as his huge tally for the season mounted. Several well-worked backline moves (notably from Winfield-Chislett) left the ball on a plate for him to push home.
The probing runs of Andy Kind and Pete Jeffery and solid defensive work from Richard Woods and Simon Wilmot made this another outstanding all-round performance. Deeping have now gone two points clear at the top of the league as again other results went their way.
Div 4NW
Wisbech 2nd XI (1) vs Market Deeping 2nd XI (1)
Wisbech is a notoriously poor hunting ground for the maroon shirts of Deeping, but this draw was two points lost rather than a point gained.
Deeping started well, though it was very much honours even in the early exchanges, with chances created at both ends. Deeping struck the only goal of the first half midway through when Treve Wagstaff and Mike Gregson combined down the right, Wagstaff’s cross was emphatically finished from close range by Steve Waters.
The second half was played in much the same vein as the first; Deeping will feel they controlled the game, carved out the greater number of chances, and though veteran ‘keeper Ray Isaacs was called upon to make some smart saves, it was the Wisbech ‘keeper who kept his side in the game on the greater number of and Deeping were also guilty of some wayward finishing, when they really should have put the game out of reach.
With just three minutes remaining, a Wisbech attack down the Deeping left flank led to a cross which Tom Richardson did well to intercept but could only direct onto the stick of an onrushing striker who slammed the ball into the vacant net to snatch a draw and deflate Deeping’s hopes of holding onto the 3 points.
EAST Div 5NW
Market Deeping 3rd IX (1) vs Bourne 3rd XI (4)
Local bragging rights on the male side went to Bourne as the experience of their ageing but skilful team and their much better finishing outclassed Deeping. Struggling Deeping are not playing badly but they aren’t stringing enough passes together and can’t seem to take advantage of their opportunities when they do reach the opposition D. They could take a little heart from the fact that they “drew” the second half after re-organising their midfield line-up and making one or two goal-scoring opportunities. Matt Brown’s gentle but accurate long range effort trickled neatly past the keeper. |
