CAMBS LEAGUE DIV ONE CUP
Market Deeping Ladies 1st XI (1) v Bourne Ladies 3rd XI (3)
In their first Cambs Division 1 level game, a cup match, Deeping Ladies were keen to prove themselves at a higher level. They went off at a good pace and dominated play.
Bourne’s team was surprisingly strong but this didn’t deter Deeping who kept the ball in Bourne’s half. Good runs from sisters Becky and Ellie Allam down the left looked promising and Jenny Brassington had a string of shots on goal.
Then a sudden break from Bourne put the first real pressure on the defence who had been clearing easily until then. A slight deflection took the ball past the Deeping keeper. Deeping heads stayed up and they pushed back even harder. Several more shots on goal were saved but good passing from new player Faye Logan and the central midfielders led to push into the D gave Ellie Allam tipped it into the goal.
Deeping were tiring by half time but the defence stayed strong with Tash Newitt and Amy Ellington remaining quick and solid on the tackle
Bourne then scored from a rebound, with the keeper unsighted.
At half time Deeping regrouped and the game restarted with Amy Gwilliams making space out on the right. Passing was fluid and again Deeping seemed the stronger team. but nothing was going in.
Karen Goddard missed narrowly with a reverse flick and Julie Bower controlled the game at sweeper, saving a tired Deeping defence several times. In a last push from Bourne an unlucky rebound from a Deeping foot and a great finish from the attack left the final score at 3-1.
Deeping face Bourne 3rds again next week in the league.
Division 3NW
Market Deeping 1st XI (4) vs Rutland Oakham 1st XI (2)
A lot of pride and boasting rights were resting on the result of this came as Deeping had a point to prove to their Rutland rivals who have suddenly been transported into Div 3NW. Despite the fact that Deeping begin training earlier than most clubs the heat took its early season toll on fitness and Club Captain Jason Purllant was disappointed with a lazy and tired performance in the second half after Deeping took a solid three goal lead. Russ Seaton, playing against his old club, Ali Rowledge, and Henry Winfield-Chislett gave Deeping a comfortable 3-0 lead. Deeping then went back into their bad old ways as individual players tried to give an exhibition of their dribbling skills. Oakham nicked a goal but Andy Brassington restored the lead. Oakham added a late consolation goal.
Division 4NW
Ely 2nd XI (3) vsMarket Deeping 2nd XI (0)
Promoted Deeping’s first game at this level for many years saw them get a rude awakening, There wasn’t a lot wrong with their play but they soon found that if they didn’t take their chances other teams will at this level. The first half was tight and close with Deeping playing the better build up hockey, and their defence looking solid while Ely looked the more likely to score when they did threaten. Deeping squandered several short corners and were then caught by defensive errors twice quickly after the break. The first stemmed from a mistake on the halfway line ands on the second the marking was naïve, A third goal sealed the game with 15 minutes to go but Deeping really deserved the consolation goal which a string of penalty corners failed to yield. It would be straightforward in the league for Deeping but their youngish team should learn a lot..
