Welfare Information
England Hockey Welfare Statement All adults working in hockey have a duty of care to be vigilant and respond appropriately to suspicions of poor practice, abuse, or bullying. This does not mean that it is your responsibility to decide if a situation is poor practice, abuse, or bullying, but it is your responsibility to report your concerns.

If you have any concerns regarding yourself or anyone else, you can contact the Club Welfare Officer whose details can be found on the Contacts page.
What will happen if I talk to someone? Your Club Welfare Officer will know what to do and how to help. They will be able to ensure that you are safe and they will believe you. There are policies and procedures which they will use. These provide information on who to contact, how to contact them, and what they can do to help.

Confidentiality

The Club Welfare Officer cannot promise to keep the information you share a secret. However, they do have to keep it CONFIDENTIAL. This means that they will have to tell only the person/people who can help.
When you are talking to the Club Welfare Offficer, ask them to explain who they need to speak to and why. They may say one of the following:
England Hockey Lead Child Welfare Officer - They will know what to do if the behaviour of adult(s) towards you is upsetting you. Talking to this person will begin to help the situation and ensure you can play hockey in a happy and safe environment.
Social services or the Police in an emergency. - Social Services or the police will be called if the Club Welfare Officer thinks you may come to more harm or are in danger. This is to help you and ensure you are safe. Alternative sources of help, advice, and support.

Important Insurance Information
The Dangers Inherent in Playing Hockey
As we are all fully aware, hockey can be a dangerous game and, with fast-moving sticks and a hard ball, we are perhaps more at risk than some other sports players. It doesn't matter what team you play in nor which training session you attend, injuries do occur even in the most mild mannered game and even when doing basic training exercises.
It is the individual responsibility of all players of all ages and playing abilities to make sure they wear appropriate protective equipment at all times. In particular, properly fitted mouth guards and shin guards are really now essential at all times for field players.
Insurance
Market Deeping Hockey Club does not insure individual members for personal injury sustained during hockey activities although we do provide public liability insurance which covers third party incidents, (see England Hockey for policy details). .
You are very strongly advised to check whether your own household, or any other insurance policy you hold, will cover you for medical and/or dental treatment, days lost from work etc. in the event of injury sustained when playing and/or training.
If you are not covered by current insurance then you should very seriously consider looking into the options open to you so that you can take out an appropriate individual policy.

The Chairman - Harrogate 2005The Chairman - Harrogate 2005The chairman at the Harrogate Veterans festival, the day after the cup final in May. Click on an image to see the sort of injury that can occur. The injury was unavoidable (for once he wasn't tackling on the wrong side), happened in open play, and the result was a dozen or more internal or external stitches.
He was lucky, avoiding any permanent damage, but the message is clear. Wear protection and think about getting your own insurance coverage.
Qualified Coaches & Umpires
If you are a qualified coach or umpire (Level 1 and above) and you keep your England Hockey public liability insurance up to date through Perkins Slade Ltd then this will provide cover for you for any incident arising from your coaching or umpiring activities at Market Deeping Hockey Club or elsewhere.
However, this England Hockey insurance still does not cover you for personal injury arising from your own hockey playing activities so, once again you should look into the options and take out appropriate additional insurance of your own.
Insurance Schemes
There are a number of specialist sports insurance policies available through the major insurance companies, which provide "value-for-money" personal insurance. However, you should still ensure that the cover provided is really what you want/need for your own circumstances. Information is available on request.
